Limited to 50 pieces, this watch uses the tubular structure of the classic Colnago Master frame as a blueprint, applying structural principles such as torsional stiffness and volume control to the field of watchmaking. Richard Mille has always been dedicated to creating sports capable of withstanding the intense impacts of tennis swings or golf ball shots. However, professional cycling presents a completely different physical challenge to mechanical movements: continuous high-frequency vibrations are transmitted directly from the road to the handlebars, ultimately affecting the rider's wrist. This environmental factor dictates that the movement design must focus entirely on structural rigidity and shock absorption, rather than simply lightweighting.
Unlike previous Richard Mille products that heavily borrowed from automotive technology, the RM 64-01 employs a symmetrical layout designed to mimic a bicycle drivetrain. The gear train establishes a direct linear relationship between the power source and the adjustment mechanism. Colnago's Master frame, introduced in the 1980s, used star-shaped tubing, increasing the surface area and rigidity of the steel without increasing wall thickness or overall weight. The RM 64-01 applies this geometric principle to the movement's titanium upper bridge. The star-shaped profile allows the bridge to resist torsion under impact while minimizing material density. The watch's color scheme—white, sky blue, and 5N red gold—is directly inspired by the C68 road bike, bringing Colnago's iconic visual elements directly to the wrist.
Case and Dial
The RM 64-01's external dimensions are: case width 43.21 mm, lug spacing 49.94 mm, and thickness 14.23 mm. The three-layer tonneau-shaped case is primarily made of white quartz TPT (thin-layer technology). This composite material is made of parallel-arranged silica fibers. Each layer is no more than 45 microns thick, impregnated with white resin, and woven on a specialized machine that changes the weft direction by 45 degrees between layers. After assembly, it is heated to 120 degrees Celsius at 6 bar in an autoclave and then machined. This special process creates a material with an extremely high strength-to-weight ratio, completely unaffected by UV radiation, and resistant to the micro-abrasion that ordinary stainless steel or gold is prone to scratching.
The bezel is inlaid with sky-blue quartz TPT, a patented formula developed specifically for this timepiece. This marks a departure from traditional unibody case construction, requiring precise milling to successfully integrate the blue composite material into the white main case while maintaining structural integrity. Movement
The RM 64-01 watch is powered by the in-house RM64-01 movement, a highly skeletonized manual-winding tourbillon movement measuring 33.00 mm x 30.80 mm and 6.28 mm thick. Its structural foundation utilizes a baseplate and bridges entirely machined from Grade 5 titanium. This special alloy comprises 90% titanium, 6% aluminum, and 4% vanadium. Compared to commercially available Grade 2 titanium, the addition of aluminum and vanadium significantly enhances the metal's physical hardness and thermal stability. This exceptional rigidity is crucial for the highly skeletonized movement, as the baseplate must withstand the immense tension of a fully wound mainspring without deformation. The titanium components undergo micro-blasting, chamfering, and hand-polishing, and are coated with a dark gray PVD layer to reduce light reflection within the movement.
The RM64-01's architecture is dominated by symmetry between the high-speed rotating mainspring barrel at 1 o'clock and the variable inertia tourbillon at 7 o'clock. This mainspring barrel completes one rotation in significantly less time than a standard mainspring barrel. This accelerated rotation significantly reduces periodic internal mainspring stickiness, resulting in a smoother torque curve during its 65-hour power reserve. The mainspring barrel gear and the third pinion feature a central involute tooth profile with a pressure angle of 20 degrees. The steel components inside the movement are brushed and micro-blasted, and then hand-polished and chamfered. The brass wheels are chamfered with diamond tools before the teeth are cut, and rounded on the front, then rhodium-plated to maintain tight geometric tolerances. The pivots themselves are polished; this process hardens the outer layer of steel by compressing the molecular structure, significantly reducing friction with the synthetic ruby bearings.
Strap
The RM 64-01 comes with a proprietary white integrated rubber strap. The strap uses a special formula to effectively resist yellowing caused by ultraviolet rays, a common aging problem of bright white vulcanized rubber components under prolonged direct sunlight. The strap features a highly breathable design with striking horizontal openwork and vertical textures along its length. These open channels serve a dual function: reducing the overall weight of the strap and promoting rapid wicking away of sweat during exercise, preventing sweat buildup on the skin.
The strap is securely attached to the case using a robust double-fork fastening system, directly fixed to the white quartz TPT case structure. This design prevents wobbling at the lug connection, ensuring the strap maintains its tonneau shape when wrapped around the wrist.
